Wrens Out & In
I was clearing the front drive when I noticed what I thought was a small rock and went to pick it up.
As I got closer I realised it was a small bird and bent down to pick it up. It was a tiny wren, my garden has several wrens and they are a joy to see. The wren appeared stunned. Had it been hit by a passing car or the local sparrowhawk I dont know. I lifted it up and examined it and couldn’t see any injuries. I held it in the palm of my hand for a while but sadly it didn’t survive. A small hole was dug, a prayer was said and the wren was laid to rest.
Lunch was calling so I prepared it and placed it on my lap tray and sat back and started to tuck in to my soup and sandwich.
I looked up to switch on the TV and was astonished to see a wren sitting on my books on the coffee table in front of the TV. We were both surprised to see each other. Where had it come from? The doors and windows were all closed. I can only think that it must have come in earlier when I had the windows open.
Now the problem was to get hold of the wren and put it outside. After several attempts and a lot of little deposits about the furniture I managed to get hold of the wren and took it to a window to let it loose. It didn’t take off straight away but sat on my hand and looked around. Bella, my cat, came over to see what I was doing and luckily that was enough for the wren to fly off.
Soup was now cold and in need of a quick blast in the microwave.
How really strange to hold two wrens in the palm of my hand in the space of a few minutes.
